Anacortes – Burrows Island

This is a good paddle for beginners. That being said, there was a surprising amount of current for an hour or so as the tide changed, considering that there is very little water behind this channel. If you had a capsize and couldn’t rescue, the current was strong enough to take a person out west of the channel. The “beaches” on the map are the only locations where you can take a kayak ashore and the two put-ins are really the only ones available. There is free parking at Sunset Beach and additional parking on the street near the put-in west of the marina. The remainder of the shore is rocky and near vertical for 6-12 feet. Approximately half the shore has a kelp bed that extends out perhaps 100 feet. See a discussion of the camp and general photos of the area here.
